Usually things slow down during summer. Not this week though. We do have the beautiful weather, but we also have a surprisingly full calendar.
Regen at Coastal Church
Every summer, Coastal Church puts on their Regen Wednesday evening series of bands and speakers. They kicked it off last week with Tim Neufeld (lead singer for Starfield) and this week (July 9) they’ll host Michael Chinchilla, with The Wind & the Waves.
Michael is pursuing a degree in pastoral leadership at Pacific Life Bible College. Prior to beginning these studies, he was a youth pastor at Youth Church. More recently, he has been a pastoral apprentice at Village Church in Surrey, which is also home to The Wind & The Waves.
What is Regen?: “We believe in communicating God’s unchanging truth in a relevant manner – through the use of various media that are most effective with our generation. Our vision is to see the young people of our city reconnect with God, and for this generation to inherit God’s plan of hope and purpose in each of their lives.”
Here’s the Regen Summer Schedule: Jeremy King / Daylight Worship Band (July 16); Sergio Najarro / RC Band (July 23); Simon Gau / SNAB Band (July 30); Koby Liesch / Relate Band (August 6); Mark Washington / Calvary Band (August 13); Sarah Bessey / Regen Band (August 20); Manafest (August 27).
Steve Bell and Bruce Hindmarsh on hymns
I won’t repeat what I said just last week, but I do think many people would enjoy hearing Steve Bell and Bruce Hindmarsh address Hymns and the Christian Spirit: A Short History of Song and Devotion, at Regent College Wednesday evening (July 9).
Passing the Mantle, in Tsawwassen and Point Grey
‘Indigenous Wisdom for the Church’ is the theme of Passing the Mantle, put on by Hummingbird Ministries in two locations – Tsawwassen First Nation Rec Hall Friday evening (July 11) and West Point Grey Presbyterian Church on Saturday.
Featured Friday evening will be comedian/musician Winston Wuttunee. The keynote speaker Saturday morning will be Coast Salish legend keeper Eugene Harry; the fluent Hulquemeum speaker will tell stories of Cowichan origin.
An Indigenous Ministers’ Panel in the afternoon features Ray Aldred (Cree/Alliance), Mary Fontaine (Cree/Presbyterian); Stewart Folster (Ojibway/Presbyterian), an Indigenous Elders’ Panel features Winston Wuttunee (Cree) and a Coast Salish elder.
BC Christian Soccer League finals
It may not be the World Cup, and it may not be Rio, but the finals are being held this weekend, and there’s been some pretty good soccer played along the way. Forty-two teams in three divisions have battled their way through a three-month season, and the finalists will settle matters this weekend.
The BC Christian Soccer League finals take place on Friday (July 11) at Burnaby Lakes Park. In a new wrinkle, the league wrap-up and trophy and award ceremonies will be held the next day at BC Place, following the Vancouver Whitecaps / Chivas USA match.
The finalists are Northside vs Redeemer Eagles (Division 1); North Shore Alliance B vs New Life (Division 2); and Johnston Heights vs Broadway Church (Division 3).
John Lennox: Has Science Buried God?
If you have a friend with a skeptical, scientific turn of mind, this could be the perfect opportunity to introduce them to a professor who speaks their language. John Lennox, professor of mathematics and fellow in mathematics and philosophy of science at Oxford, will address the issue Has Science Buried God? this Saturday (July 12) at Christian Life Assembly in Langley.
Lennox, who is known for his debates with New Atheists such as Richard Dawkins and the late Christopher Hitchens, has been participating in When Worldviews Collide this week, an event co-sponsored by RZIM Canada and Apologetics Canada.
