Trinity Western University is pleased to host author Sarah Bessey to speak at the Gender Studies Institute’s Seventh Annual Lecture Series on January 14, 2013. The lecture is free and open to the public. All are welcome to attend.

The Abbotsford-resident is a popular blogger and author whose newly released book, Jesus Feminist: An Invitation to Revisit the Bible’s View of Women (Howard Books 2013), critically analyzes the Scriptures and church practices that address gender equality, as well as advocates for more diverse experiences and female leadership positions to become part of the contemporary church.

Bessey believes the arc of Scripture reveals a liberating vision for women. “I’m a feminist because I love Jesus so much,” she said.

Theologian and author Tony Jones writes of Jesus Feminist: “For some time now, feminism and Christianity have been bedfellows, but primarily in the halls of academia. What Sarah Bessey does is claim the voice of feminism for her own Christian faith—an evangelical faith, no less! The result is a powerful and empowering narrative that both men and women will find compelling and readable.”

Bessey first came on the scene as a blogger at sarahbessey.com, focusing on life with her husband and three children. She has since become an accidental grassroots voice for postmodern and emerging women in the Church on issues from mothering to politics, and theology to ecclesiology.

Her writing has been well received in many publications including ChurchLeaders.com, Relevant Magazine, Converge Magazine, A Deeper Story, SheLoves Magazine, and Emergent Village.

She also works with Mercy Ministries of Canada, a non-profit residential home for women seeking freedom from life-controlling issues. She is currently working on her second book.
