Since the Second Vatican Council many of the most divisive issues in the Catholic Church have revolved around moral issues: contraception, abortion, euthanasia, the death penalty, nuclear weapons and just war. Catholic moral theology struggled for centuries to identify sins as exactly as possible and entered into numerous controversies about moral norms and laws.

Accordingly, moral living, as an expression of the life of Jesus’ disciples, was often directed by the “Thou shalt nots,” creating an atmosphere of strict obedience of clear-cut laws. Today the question “Who do we want to be as followers of Christ?” has come to the forefront and we shall explore some of the consequences of this major shift.

Fr. Mark Miller, CCSR, was ordained in 1975 as a Redemptorist priest after studies in Winnipeg, Toronto and West Germany. Fr. Mark worked with young people for six years followed by the preaching of parish missions for seven years.

After receiving a doctorate in moral theology from the University of Notre Dame (1992), he spent 16 years as a clinical bioethicist at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon and for the Catholic Health Association of Saskatchewan. In 2008 he moved to Toronto as part of the leadership team of the Redemptorists but continued his work in Catholic healthcare ethics at the Centre for Clinical Ethics (St. Joseph’s Health, St. Michael’s Hospital, Providence Health). He has taught and provided workshops at Catholic Colleges, in adult formation programs, for Catholic teachers, and many health care practitioners.

He is passionate about the Gospel call to the ministry of healing, to Catholic and faith-based health care, to palliative/hospice care, and to parish nursing and looks forward to sharing his experiences as a visiting scholar for St. Mark’s College and Providence Health.
