Around Town: Winter Aesthetic, Daniel Plan, St. Mary’s: No marijuana store . . .

Snow Laden by WL Hibberd.

Snow Laden by WL Hibberd.

The Lookout Gallery at Regent College displays good art all year round, but this time it’s seasonal, with WL Hibberd’s Winter Aesthetic. According to the gallery, Hibberd “searches for beauty in the light, form and colour of winter’s landscape.”

Hibberd, who lives in the Okanagan, says this of his work:

This collection of winter paintings was realized over a number of years from 2007 to the present. Over that period I have moved through a variety of processes, media and ability (hopefully). The earlier work was done on location outdoors (en plein-air) in sometimes extremely cold conditions.

The joy of painting from life was tempered with a respect for working in close proximity to large carnivorous wildlife. I transitioned to a process of beginning my work outdoors and then moving into the studio for finish.

My latest work is built on gold or silver leaf and oil paint. The light shines through transparent passages and reflects off of the leaf, creating a cohesive and dynamic inner glow. The precious metal underlay represents a unity of sacredness in all things; thereby the medium is the message.

If you visit the Lookout exhibition (which runs until February 4), you might also want to walk across the UBC campus to see Colleen Barlow’s Whale Dreams at Beaty Biodiversity Museum. See story here.

The Daniel Plan

danielplan1A simulcast presentation by pastor Rick Warren, Dr. Daniel Amen, Dr. Mark Hyman, Miles McPherson and Dr. John Townsend offers “an innovative approach to achieving a healthy lifestyle where people get better together by optimizing their health in the key areas of faith, food, fitness, focus and friends.”

And how does the author of The Purpose Driven Life come to be involved with such a project? Actually, there’s quite a good answer, spelled out in a Gospel Coalition (Jason Seville) review of the original book. This is how it all began for Rick Warren:

His inspiration came during a baptism service at Saddleback Church when more than 800 members were baptized. After personally lifting more than 145,000 pounds of soggy church members, Warren had an epiphany: “Everybody’s fat!” (13; cf. TIME interview). It simultaneously struck him that he wasn’t exempted from this observation; he was physically unhealthy as well, setting a bad example for his congregation.

He stood before his church, confessed his poor stewardship, and invited Saddleback to join him in getting fit. Warren assembled a crack squad of elite nutritionists, doctors and exercise physiologists to help put this plan together. To his surprise, more than 12,000 church members joined the cause that Sunday, and they collectively lost over 250,000 pounds in the first year.

There are two Daniel Plan events, one at Broadway Church in Vancouver this Saturday (January 16) and the other at Church in the Valley in Langley a week later.

St. Mary’s: No marijuana store

stmaryscatholicAdrian Dix, NDP MLA for Vancouver-Kingsway joined members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church as they delivered piles of petitions against a proposed marijuana dispensary to Vancouver City Hall December 23. Following is a portion of a story in The B.C. Catholic:

A proposed marijuana dispensary has members of St. Mary’s Parish worried about the impact on their community. More than 1,800 signed a petition asking the City of Vancouver to not approve the Scooter Health Society’s application to sell the drug at 3441 Kingsway.

“This is something that is really in my heart,” said Mildred Moy, the head of St. Mary’s street ministry, who launched the petition.

“We encounter a lot of people in addiction,” and marijuana is a gateway drug that can lead to other abuses, she said.

“A friend of mine is a medical marijuana user, and even she signed the petition. Both of us agree that medical marijuana should be sold in pharmacies and should go through (government) approval to ensure safety for those using it as medicine.”

Dix, who attends Wilson Heights United Church, said, “It’s a really exciting thing when citizens get involved.” Several years ago, St. Mary’s successfully opposed a liquor store that wanted to open up a couple of blocks from them, near the Joyce Street SkyTrain station.

Mikhail Lennikov at First Lutheran Church in November, 2014.

Pat Johnson of the Vancouver Courier wrote Canadian Bible Society closes Vancouver bookstore January 13. The decision to sell has been made, but apparently not yet the actual sale.

Another Courier article – Former Vancouver MP buoyed by ruling on one-time KGB agent – suggested that Mikhail Lennikov may be able to return to Canada. Lennikov voluntarily returned to Russia last summer after living for six years in the First Lutheran Church at 41st and Wales, a place he sought sanctuary in June 2009 to avoid deportation.
