Oct 28 – Nov 3: Love Conference, Hymn Festival, St. Peter’s Fireside . . .

john_stackhouse1“Youth pastors in Vancouver and area: Bring your gang and let me do the awkward talking for you!” That tempting tweet from Regent College prof John Stackhouse refers to Love Conference 2013, taking place this weekend (November 1 – 2) at UBC.

Sponsored by Ambassadors for Christ in Canada, the event will draw young adults together to address ‘Clarity in Confusion: The Bible, Sex and the Church Today.’

John Stackhouse teaches on theology and culture at Regent College. He has written and edited 11 books, while his commentary or religion and contemporary culture has been featured by many major broadcast and print media, including The New York Times, The Atlantic, ABC News, CBC Radio, Time and Readers’ Digest.

Among the topics to be addressed at Love Conference: Are Christians Against Sexual Freedom?; Thinking About Sex . . . as a Christian; Sex, the Church and the World: How Do We Deal With the Difference; and What Should Pastors Say – and Not Say – About Sex (for pastors and leaders).

Many people miss the old hymns, but fortunately, every year the Hymn Festival comes along to help us carry on. ‘To God Be the Glory’ will be held at Evangelical Chinese Bible Church on Marine Drive in Burnaby this Saturday (November 2).

This is the 12th annual event. The one time I went there was a full house at Broadway Church. And it was a very enjoyable evening – for some, no doubt, a return to the past, for others a moving experience of a style of worship not found in most churches today.

Key players are master of ceremonies William H. Lim, conductor Herbert Tsang and organist Woo-Lim Kim.

St. Peter’s Fireside

Sure, it’s just one church launching, but it’s been very well prepared for and publicized – and it’s in a strategic location. They’re inviting anyone interested “to join us as we start a new church in the heart of the city.”

St. Peter’s Fireside will be meeting at UBC Robson Square Theatre, 10:45 am, this Sunday (November 3).

stpetersinsidePastor Alastair Sterne has been careful, almost methodical in planning for the church. “From day one, he said on his blog, “we realized this calling to start a church in downtown Vancouver is not something we want to do alone (nor can we do it alone!). If we want to seek the renewal of Vancouver, which we do, then we need to be a part of something much larger than ourselves: we need to be a part of a gospel movement. So, we formed partnerships to help us in this journey. Summit Church in Orlando sent us, Redeemer City to City trained us, C2C Network have coached and supported us, and as of most recent St. John’s Vancouver has joined us in our work.”

Describing St John’s, an Anglican church, as their “mother church,” Sterne expressed his gratitude for their support here, and explained why St. Peter’s Fireside has decided to follow the Anglican path here.

Best wishes to Alastair and his family; to his team; to the new church; and to all the church plants and churches in the downtown core. We know that whatever their denomination or theological orientation, they will work together for God’s kingdom.
