A new exhibition at the Dal Schindell Gallery explores the first major illuminated manuscript of the complete Bible in centuries.
‘The Word Come to Life: An Exhibition of the Saint John’s Bible’ will run until October 26. An extra feature will be a weekly (Thursdays, 1 – 3 pm) “guided experience” to explore the work
Here is what to look forward to:
This contemporary illuminated Bible was created by a group of 23 scribes, artists and assistants in a Scriptorium in Wales under the artistic direction of Donald Jackson, Senior Scribe to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Crown Office at the House of Lords.
The team worked in conjunction with a committee of theologians, scholars and artists from Saint John’s Abbey and University in Collegeville, Minnesota. After 15 years of work, the pages were completed in 2011 and given a permanent home at Saint John’s Abbey and University.
The Saint John’s Bible incorporates many of the characteristics of its medieval predecessors: it was written on vellum using quills, natural handmade inks, hand ground pigments and gild such as gold leaf, silver leaf and platinum.
Yet, it employs the modern, English translation the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) as well as contemporary scripts and Illuminations. The prints displayed in this gallery showcase a small sampling of the approximately 160 illuminations in the completed work.
A January 3, 2019 review of The Saint John’s Bible and its Tradition (Wipf and Stock, 2018) on the Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA) blog stated:
David Lyle Jeffrey’s essay “Beauty in the Bible and the Beauty of Holiness,” the first after the introduction, sets a broader context for the meaning of beauty in Christian Scripture and theology. Examining both Hebrew and Greek terms for beauty in the Bible, he finds that not only do words for beauty appear frequently in the Old Testament, but the language is itself beautiful poetry, well-shaped even when expressing anger toward humans. . . .
In an age of mass-produced Bibles, both printed and digital, we inhabitants of the 21st century often fail to grasp the particularity of Bibles in the manuscript culture of the medievals. No two medieval manuscripts are alike, and each has its own stories, not only in its contents but in its life as an artifact.

Vancouver College turns 100
Vancouver College celebrated its 100th anniversary late last month, paying particular attention to its history and its accomplishments – including its famed football program.
Terry O’Neill, a 1969 graduate, wrote about the school for the The B.C. Catholic:
“Vancouver College is full of boys – 1,083 of them, in fact – striving to be the best in their areas of passion, yes, but more inspiringly, they lift each other up on a daily basis,” Principal Daryl Weaver said during a September 24 ceremony that closed a day of celebratory activities. . . .
The school’s history reaches back to 1906 when the rector of Holy Rosary Cathedral began efforts to enlist the services of the Christian Brothers of Ireland to open a school in Vancouver. “Hearing nothing positive from across the Atlantic, his spirits and those of others supporting his endeavour were not discouraged,” the school states on its centennial webpage. . . .
The school opened on September 5, 1922, when the brothers welcomed 91 students to Vancouver College’s initial facility at Rosary Hall, located at 650 Richards Street, just south of Holy Rosary Cathedral. Vancouver College moved to its Shaughnessy Heights campus in 1925. The school enrols students from kindergarten to Grade 12.
