Around Town: Cultivating Shalom, Legacy Education, Freud’s Last Session

Deb Judas is woman of many talents – retreat facilitator, soul care practitioner, Neighbourhood Value Pastor at The Neighbourhood Church (in Metro Vancouver) and Director of Formation with Forge Canada.

And author. Last fall, Cultivating Shalom, (WestBow Press) was published. She will lead a webinar based on the book’s themes January 25.

Here is what to expect from the Cultivating Shalom event:

With all the noise and uncertainty, along with our fast-paced world and jam-packed schedules, it is often difficult to keep sight of the goodness and beauty that surrounds us. Finding peace seems elusive when we are constantly bombarded with bad news, negativity and reminders that we don’t have enough.

Is it possible to be content and fulfilled when there is a perpetual underlying sense that we don’t measure up? How can we contribute in positive ways to bring about healing, justice and hope to our world, even in the midst of disruption and disappointment?

The answers to these questions seem to lie in a familiar, ancient writing. Cultivating Shalom uses the imagery and wisdom of Psalm 23 to uncover new insights on what it means to flourish and experience a deep sense of wholeness, delight and wonder in all seasons of life. This is not 10 easy steps to wellness. Rather, it is an invitation to keep company with God and others, providing a new lens that reveals the extraordinary power of ordinary life.

Legacy Education Summit

Nicholas Ellis is founder and CEO of Christian Halls International.

Anyone looking for education alternatives these days – and I know many are – might benefit from this free Legacy Education Summit this Saturday (January 20) at Riverside Calvary Chapel in Langley.

The gathering will explore and ponder the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of education?
  • What kind of students do we want to enter the world?
  • How can we help reshape education so that students enter the world well-equipped?
  • How do we create a lasting effect?
  • How can education influence our culture for Christ?
  • What role do parents, families, and our elders have in education?

Keynote speakers are:

  • Nicholas Ellis, a second-generation homeschooler, is founder and CEO of Christian Halls International. CHI helps build local, mentor-led communities of Christ-centred higher education that is academically excellent, debt-free and discipleship-focused. He is passionate about giving back responsibility for the formation of souls to families and churches. He has a Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Oxford where he taught New Testament and Greek at Wycliffe Hall. He earned his Masters in Theology and Religion at Trinity Western University
  • Bruce Friesen is a visionary leader, a church planter, a launcher of the Third Education Revolution Canada and the founder of Children Arise Ministries and Kingdomize Global. Bruce’s passion lies in fostering transformative partnerships, orchestrating strategic alliances and navigating networks to connect resources for kingdom ventures.
  • David Hunt is Education Director and BC Director at Cardus.

David Hunt is the Education Director at Cardus. He leads original research initiatives with academics from around the globe on educational pluralism, excellence, and outcomes. In addition to presenting regularly to audiences across Canada, David’s work has been presented to various levels of government, appeared in Canada’s major media and used as evidence in court. He holds a Master of Public Policy from Simon Fraser University and Bachelor of Business Administration (with distinction) from Kwantlen Polytechnic University, where he was the Dean’s Medal recipient and is now a faculty member.

  • Paul Johnson began his teaching career in the Langley school district. In 1983, he responded to the call to Christian education and joined Regent Christian Academy, a church-based K-12 school in its early stages. In 1993, Paul was appointed Principal, and over the years, the Academy experienced remarkable growth. It expanded its offerings with the addition of a thriving international student program and a Distributed Learning (online) division. He retired in December 2021. Highlights of his career included establishing a robust student mission program and building and supporting church-based schools in Nigeria, Kenya and Mexico. Paul’s greatest desire as a Christian educator is to see students experience a transforming encounter with Jesus.

Freud’s Last Session

Sigmund Freud (Anthony Hopkins) and C.S. Lewis (Matthew Goode) in Freud’s Last Session.

Freud’s Last Session has been playing for several days at Cineplex Fifth Avenue Cinemas on the west side of Vancouver, and it looks as though it will be there for a few more.

Promotional materials say this about the film:

On the eve of the Second World War, two of the greatest minds of the twentieth century, C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud, converge for their own personal battle over the existence of God.

Freud’s Last Session interweaves the lives of Freud and Lewis, past, present and through fantasy, bursting from the confines of Freud’s study on a dynamic journey.

Local film critic Peter Chattaway wrote about it last fall on his Thoughts and Spoilers Substack site, just after it premiered in Los Angeles. He began:

Thirty years ago, Anthony Hopkins played C.S. Lewis in a movie called Shadowlands. In one early scene in that film, a colleague of Lewis’s teases him with the idea that there’s some sort of sexual subtext to the Narnia stories, and Hopkins-as-Lewis dismisses the idea as a bit of “hand-me-down Freudianism”.

Now, this year, Hopkins is playing Sigmund Freud himself . . . and he’s doing so in a movie about a fictitious meeting between Freud and C.S. Lewis.

Go here for the article, which quotes reviews of the film in several major publications. He also links to many of his earlier writings about The Inklings (C.S. Lewis, Tolkien and their friends), and his reviews of Narnia-based films and The Most Reluctant Convert: The Untold Story of C.S. Lewis, and more. Well worth digging into.
