Around Town: international Salvationist gathering, Marhaba, nurse suspended

General Brian Peddle addressing the Salvation Army’s International Conference of Leaders at Cariboo Hill Temple in Burnaby.

Salvation Army leaders from all over the world have been meeting at Cariboo Hill Temple this week. The International Conference of Leaders (ICL) gathered September 24.

Speaking on the opening day, General Brian Peddle, the international leader of the Salvation Army, recognized the 58 territories and commands and 133 countries represented at the conference. This is the first such international gathering since 2017 and the first under Peddle’s command.

He described the agenda of the gathering during a September 28 interview; here is a portion of what he said:

We are trying to bring focus to keeping the main thing the main thing. . . .

Cariboo Hill Temple is hosting the conference.

How do we be an army of salvation in a time when some of the messaging associated with salvation is viewed to be as not very tolerant, not very popular, perhaps even for some the wrong side of history, as we sometimes say?

We have a keen understanding, here at this conference, that as leaders we have to lead through a spiritual dry time that exists in the world to a place where the church is faithful, as it has been in difficult times in years past – that we do not compromise our responsibility to be salt and light in the world.

That means coming back to a mission of God to the world, and that’s to redeem the world. . . .

I’m just blessed as the General because I’m leading the largest Salvation Army that’s ever existed. Our membership has grown to a point where this is the largest Army ever.

Marhaba Food Story

The Marhaba Food Story team.

Anne Baird posted a positive story on the Anglican Diocese of New Westminster website September 16, reflecting on the developing friendship between members of three West Vancouver Anglican churches (St. Francis-in-the-Wood, St. Christopher’s St. Stephen’s),  and a Syrian refugee family they sponsored to come to Canada.

Baird described the challenges faced by Ranim as she sought work in her field of civil engineering, and her hard work as she created work opportunities for other newcomers. In 2020 she began producing and delivering Mediterranean food.

Then:

In May of 2022, Ranim found a business partner in Amr Halem, an Egyptian restaurateur who used the same commercial kitchen. Combining their experience and talents, they created a new restaurant at 1157 Davie Street in downtown Vancouver: Marhaba Food Story.

The restaurant opened the third week in June. In its second week of operation, a group of five friends from St. Francis decided to share dinner there. We wanted to experience and celebrate how our church’s sponsorship of a refugee from Syria had worked out.

It was a huge success! The food was delicious; the ambience, attractive and serene; the young staff eager to serve. Ranim was gracious, Amr, quietly supportive of their new project.

The daily special which included beef, chicken and lamb shawarma, with fragrant rice and steaming vegetables, was abundant. We didn’t miss alcohol, particularly with the copious selection of juices, coffees, teas, smoothies and soft drinks on offer. Prices were reasonable.

The name of the restaurant tells its story. ‘Marhaba’ means ‘hello and welcome’ in Arabic.

Baird describes how Marhaba is now giving back to the local community and sharing “culture, cuisine, customs and history with new Canadian friends.”

Nurse suspended

The BC College of Nurses and Midwives issued a notice September 23 that Christopher Villaflor, LPN has been suspended for four months for performing a religious ritual on an Indigenous client without their consent.

They said:

The Registrant has voluntarily agreed to terms equivalent to a limit and/or condition on their practice, including:

    1. A suspension of their nursing registration for four months.
    2. A limit prohibiting them from being the sole nurse on duty for a period of one year.
    3. A period of mentorship in the workplace for one year.
    4. Remedial education in ethics, trauma informed care, and cultural safety & humility.

The Inquiry Committee is satisfied that the terms will protect the public.

The exact nature of the religious ritual is not clear from the College’s statement.
