Around Town: Check out these diverse events, meet some new people

A Rocha will host Tatalu Harvest Festival October 10.

This week I’m just going to encourage everyone to have a good look at the Events pages on this site. There is so much going on around Metro Vancouver and I’m sure there is something enticing for everyone.

I will highlight some of worship gatherings, concerts, business talks, tech collaborations and other events going on over the next couple of weeks. I try to represent all wings of the church. You can enter events yourselves, if you would like; I do check them over before adding them.

There are more than 90 listings on the Event pages currently; the number rises and falls quite a bit, depending on the season. There will be lots happening between now and Christmas.

Here are just a few of the events coming up in the next couple of weeks – all great opportunities to meet people from other churches. (Scroll down to the bottom of the page for links or, better yet, go to the Event pages.):

• Walk the Wall, with International China Concern at Locarno & Spanish Banks, Vancouver (Sept 26)

The Great Wall of China is a remarkable 21,196 kilometres long. The thousands of men and women, boys and girls, around the world who have participated in our Walk The Wall fundraiser since 2007 have figuratively covered that distance many times over. Walk for China’s children with disabilities!

• Interchurch Worship Night at Christ Worship Centre, Surrey (Sept 26)

Interchurch Worship Night

Welcome to the 2026 Interchurch Worship Night at Christ Worship Centre! We believe God wants to move powerfully again through unified worship across church communities. Invite your friends! Come experience the goodness of God and testimonies within the community as we gather together in worship, prayer and fellowship. We can’t wait to see you there!

• Chain Breaking Worship with Adaora at The Restored House Chapel, Surrey (Sept 26)

AdaoraMusic Inc, in partnership with House of Mercy International Gospel Ministry, warmly invites you to a powerful evening of worship, prayer, freedom, restoration and divine encounter. This is more than a musical gathering. It is a sacred opportunity for people from different churches, cultures and communities to come together with one heart and one purpose: to lift the name of Jesus. (Seems unfortunate this is on the same night as Interchurch Worship Night – a good reason to check these Event listings!)

• Jazz Vespers / Hymn Swing at St. Andrew’s United Church, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church, Golden Ears United Church (Sept 26 – 27)

Several churches regularly welcome jazz musicians into their sanctuaries. The leading influence in this movement is Brentwood Presbyterian Church in Burnaby: “Brentwood has a special relationship with the jazz community in Greater Vancouver.  Those connections have been generated largely through our weekly worship services centred on its artistry and our offer of our space for the cultivation of that artistry.”

• City Wide Worship & Prayer Night at CA Church, Coquitlam (Sept 27)

Churches from across the Tri-Cities are locking arms to bring our community together to pray over our region. Eagle Ridge Bible Fellowship, Calvary Baptist Church, Hillside Church and CA Church are partnering to co-lead this special worship and prayer gathering. Let’s join as one body to worship, seek His face and celebrate all that God is doing in our cities!

• Business by the Book at Coastal Church, Vancouver (Sept 30)

Introducing our keynote speaker: Joo Kim Tiah. Principal, Holborn Group. CEO of publicly listed TA Global Bhd. He is a visionary developer managing an international portfolio valued in excess of $2 billion across North America, Asia and Australia.

• The Antioch Coalition: Many Cultures, One Kingdom at Calvary Worship Centre, Surrey (Sept 30)

Canada and North America are increasingly multicultural, and this presents both tremendous opportunities and unique challenges for the church. How do we build ministries where people from different cultures, backgrounds and generations can truly worship, serve, grow and advance God’s Kingdom together? The annual ministers / leaders conference is aimed at building a thriving multicultural ministry. Addresses by Sam Owusu, founder and senior pastor of Calvary Worship Centre; Jon Wong, senior pastor of Five Stones Church; and Wes Daase, lead pastor of Surrey Pentecostal Assembly.

• Jens Zimmermann: Guarding Our Humanity in the Digital Age, Catholic Pacific College, Langley (Oct 1)

We hand over our attention, our memory, even our friendships to screens and algorithms without ever really deciding to. Pope Leo XIV’s new encyclical asks whether that trade is making us more human, or less. Jens Zimmermann pushes the question further: when it comes to Christian education, he’ll argue the right response to AI and digital culture isn’t careful integration – it’s resistance. Jens Zimmermann is a philosophical theologian and the J.I. Packer Chair of Theology at Regent College / UBC in Vancouver. He is the author of several works on theology, humanism and human flourishing, and his new book, What Is Christian Humanism: Recovering a Human Society, will be released in October.

• FaithTech Vancouver Hackathon at Bureau, Vancouver (Oct 2 – 4)

Calling all developers, designers and dreamers! Join us at #HACKVAN2026, which exists to help redemptive organizations leverage tech to accelerate their impact. Within 48 hours, we will design, develop and user-test Minimum Viable Products to address problems faced by these organizations.

• Numbering Our Days: Time at the Movies – Artist Talk at Regent College Chapel, Vancouver (Oct 2)

This exhibition is a playful but powerful meditation on how cinema shapes our sense of being in time. Assembled from thousands of clips from feature films, Ron Reed’s works reprocess the temporality of cinema through unexpected ordering principles – dates, times of day, an endless sequence of staircases, etc. – in ways that make conspicuous not only the medium of film but the time of the lives we’re living. Go here for a write-up about the exhibit, which runs until October 3, but is not open Sept 26, 27 and 30.

• Jim Byrnes Trio at Bez Arts Hub, Langley (Oct 2 – 3)

Vancouver’s own Jim Byrnes is a rare gem, with numerous Juno Awards and Maple Blues Awards and many other accolades, Jim keeps the music coming and audiences growing. He has made many great records and is a veteran entertainer. We are so delighted to have Jim coming to Bez.

There are many other events in the next couple of weeks, including the For King + Country concert September 25 (but it’s already sold out) and Catholic End-of-Life Care Panel (for members of the medical community). Virtually all events are open to all though.

Looking further into October and November you will see, for example:

• A Rocha’s Tatalu Harvest Festival
• Alpha Canada’s Sharing Jesus webinar
• Todd Townsend: Living in a Sacramental Spirituality
• Renaissance Vancouver
• Faith Comes Through Hearing: Heart for Asia
• Michael Hart: an Evening of Music, Stories & Hope
• Songs & Stories from the Heart of Brian Doerksen
• ELO Forum
• Son of a Preacherman

And much more.

Events are listed below, but there is also an Events page and a Jobs page on the Church for Vancouver site.
