Around Town: Kinder Morgan rally, Ring Out!, church burned, IDOP Sunday . . .

earthkeepers-stop-kinder-morgan-insideEarthkeepers and several other faith-based groups will be taking part in another kind of pro-life action next Saturday (November 19) at city hall.

They will be joining what they describe as “a monumental effort led by hundreds of organizations and thousands of common citizens in Metro Vancouver” to block the Kinder Morgan pipeline, “for the sake of atmospheric and planetary stability.”:

As followers of Jesus, we recognize that by saying ‘no’ to the pipeline expansion in the Burrard Inlet, we are affirming the way of the God of righteousness and love. This is a big ‘yes’ to life. May God’s kingdom come and God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Earthkeepers: Christians for Climate Justice is “an ecumenical group in Vancouver, Coast Salish Territories, working out biblical teachings in regards to ecology, love of neighbour and climate justice.”

The Say ‘Yes’ to Life (and Stop Kinder Morgan) event will run from 10 am – 3 pm. Members of Earthkeepers, Salal and Cedar and other Christian groups will meet at Spirit of Life Lutheran Church, just a few steps east along 10th Avenue from city hall, starting at 10 am. There will be a eucharist/communion service from 10:30 – 11:30. At 11:45 people will gather to head over to the march, which begins at noon.

For a comment from Earthkeepers organizer Jason Wood about protesting Kinder Morgan on Burnaby Mountain in 2014 and civil disobedience go here. Retired Regent College professor Loren Wilkinson took on similar issues here, and commented on Pope Francis’s Laudato Si’ Encyclical here.

Ring Out! at Christ Church

ring-out-2Christ Church Cathedral is inviting the community to celebrate the completion of three major programs: Raise the Roof, Ring the Bells and Feed the Hungry.

The Ring Out! celebration and open house will be held at the Cathedral next Thursday (November 17), 4:30 – 6:30 pm, and will include the inaugural illumination of the spire and pealing of the bells.

Here is some of the history, from the Christ Church website:

In 1994, the Cathedral community embraced an ambitious plan to restore the fabric of the building, reveal its heritage features and strengthen its foundations through a seismic upgrade. More than $12.5 million has been raised to date, completely renovating the interior, installing a new pipe organ in a ‘floating’ choir loft, restoring Vancouver’s WWI and WWII Regimental Colours, as well as making the building functional and accessible for all people.

In this final phase of renewal, the Cathedral’s roof must be replaced with a new seismically safe and more durable roof, an elegant stained glass bell spire will be constructed at the northeast side of the church with four bells, and the Cathedral’s small kitchen will be doubled in size so the Cathedral can better serve the needs of Vancouver’s hungry and vulnerable.

Heritage church burned

Kerrisdale Baptist Church was named one of Heritage Vancouver’s Top 10 Endangered Sites; photo from 2014.

A church listed by Heritage Vancouver on its Top Ten Endangered Sites list in 2014 burned down in the early morning hours of November 8. The vacant building was located at 43rd and East Boulevard.

The Kerrisdale Baptist Church was built in 1912 and served as a Sunday school in Port Coquitlam before it was moved to Kerrisdale in 1921. It operated as a Christian Science Church from 1956 until 2013, when it closed.

The Kerrisdale Baptist congregation continues as Trinity Baptist Church at 49th and Granville. Go here for a Heritage Vancouver article I posted about it in 2014.

A few days earlier (November 2), Gospel Mission (not Union Gospel Mission) was forced to close. A CBC News report noted:

All services and programs offered by Gospel Mission on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside have been cancelled because shaking from a demolition project next door has left the over-a-century-old building structurally unsafe.

“We have a crack running right from the ground up into the second level in our main structural corner on Carrall Street itself,” said mission pastor Wesley Chadwick. . . .

“We’re the last of seven original missions that had been set up during the Gastown era, before it became officially Vancouver – and, the great fire,” said Chadwick.

Five years ago, the Vancouver Heritage Foundation named the building where the mission has been located since the 1940s one of Vancouver’s 125 “places that matter.”

In the 1880s, the building was called the Vancouver Drug Company and at the turn of the century became the Louvre Hotel

It is not known when Gospel Mission will be able to resume operations.

IDOP Sunday: Praying for persecuted Christians

icopsundaycanada1Many local churches will be marking IDOP Sunday November 13. Organizers say:

“Pray for us . . .” is the cry of persecuted Christians around the world. Today across the earth more than 200 million of them are suffering for their faith in Jesus Christ. Each year, Christians in more than 130 countries stand in prayer with our persecuted sisters and brothers through the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP). Join with us as Christians across Canada unite in prayer for our brothers and sisters who suffer because they declare their faith in Christ.

One IDOP Sunday event will take place at Surrey Pentecostal Church. Pastor Steve, who spent more than seven years in prison for preaching the gospel in Vietnam – and now has 1,000 local churches and 40,000 believers – will speak. Joining him will be Canadian director of International Christian Response Mel Wiebe; the Royal Heirs will provide music.
