City in Focus (CIF) has announced that Ron Reed – artistic director and founder of Pacific Theatre – is the 2015 recipient of its Arts and Faith Award. A release stated:

Reed was selected based on his wide range of accomplishments in the field of theatre, including:
● completing a Masters of Fine Arts in Acting from the California Institute of the Arts
● receiving nominations for 11 Jessie Awards (for the 2014/15 season ), Toronto’s Dora Mavor Moore Award and Edmonton’s Sterling Award
● winning the Chalmers Canadian Play Award
● producing a series of over 50 written plays
● founding Vancouver’s Pacific Theatre

This year could have been something of a letdown for Reed and company. Last summer, while celebrating its 30th birthday, Pacific Theatre took home four Jessie Awards, beating out the likes of Bard on the Beach (three) and Arts Club Theatre (two). All that despite the fact it was the first time Pacific Theatre had competed in the Large Theatre (rather than the Small Theatre) category.

However, Reed’s Arts and Faith Award, and the 11 Jessie nominations (awards will be handed out on the 22nd) have ensured that Reed and Pacific Theatre are having another banner year.

“The 2015 Arts and Faith Award was awarded to an outstanding local treasure, Ron Reed,” says Louise Tischhauser, vice president of City in Focus. “Ron walks nimbly along a tightrope of faith, culture and artistic endeavour to produce wonderful drama. His passion to produce theatre in our midst is extraordinary.”

Reed responded, saying:

The City in Focus Arts and Faith Award played a significant role in helping underwrite Pacific Theatre’s production of The Whipping Man, which has been honoured with eight Jessie Richardson Award nominations, including one for outstanding production. The arts explore and nourish the human soul. This award is one more tangible expression of CIF’s long legacy of encouraging and supporting the arts in our city.

City in Focus will be releasing two additional awards in the fall of 2015 for outstanding achievement in the areas of ‘Works and Faith’ and ‘Compassion and Faith.’

Garage sale supports Co:Here Housing

co-here1Every year, hundreds of households join in the Great Grandview Garage Sale. Houses between Clark and Nanaimo, north of Broadway offer all kinds of stuff for sale, from “crates of records, dressers overflowing with vintage clothes, toys and books falling off of shelves.”

This year – on Saturday (June 20), 10 am – 3 pm – a team from Grandview Calvary Baptist Church will get in on the action, hoping to help the church realize its long-term dream for affordable housing. Grandview member Christina Chiu puts it this way:

Grandview Calvary Baptist church has a heart to care for our ‘parish’ or neighbourhood and many people from the church actually live close to the church. Years ago, the idea germinated . . . that we could use the plot of land that we have as a parking lot [at 1st and Victoria] to build affordable housing for the homeless and the poor (those with financial challenges and also marginalized).

The dream also hoped that this would be a challenge other churches to do similar creative things to address the relevant social needs of our city (such as homelessness and social isolation) with their parking lots and also for this place to be a sign . . . to not only be housing, but a place people could truly call home because it would be a place of a supportive community of mutuality, love and care because of Jesus.

Co:Here is the name for this venture. Go here to find out more about the project and here for details about the sale.

“What role does the church play in the global ministry of reconciliation?” That is a large and complex topic, but a committed local group has been asking such questions in a number of settings. An art show and a conference will deal with some of the issues.

A North Korean Art Exhibit at Regent College’s Allison Library (until July 24) and a one-day conference – Global Church and Reconciled Korea – on Saturday (June 20) will “bring the local church in BC together for a better understanding of the divided peninsula and of God’s ongoing work of reconciliation.”
