Around Town: Cloverdale Community Kitchen, Open Generation, Heart for Asia

A church-based organization is stepping in to take up the slack for another group that has been providing meals for vulnerable people.

The Surrey Now-Leader reported on the situation October 18:

A local charity is expanding its Mobile Meals program.

The Cloverdale Community Kitchen (CCK) is filling a gap that recently opened up when White Rock Meals on Wheels told its customers it was closing its doors.

Matthew Campbell, the director of CCK, said the surge in demand has created a surge in need for both volunteers and donations.

“When we heard the White Rock Meals on Wheels program was shutting down, we contacted them to figure out how we could take on their clients,” said Campbell. “They’d been running for 51 years, so we knew we had to do something.” . . .

Campbell said CCK’s Mobile Meals serves 130 seniors five meals four times a week in the Cloverdale, Langley and Surrey areas.

They deliver two meals on Thursdays so the seniors also have a meal for Friday. Adding in the White Rock numbers, the Cloverdale Community Kitchen will eventually be serving nearly 200 clients per week.

The CCK site states:

The Cloverdale Community Kitchen began in 2011 when the City of Surrey and the RCMP approached Pacific Community Church and asked if they would provide meals for the homeless as another organization had closed their kitchen.

Pacific Community Church describes its role with CCK:

In 2011 Pacific decided to build a kitchen and since then the Kitchen has grown into a ministry that impacts 100s of lives weekly. Many of Pacific are involved in its work. It is an expression of our belief that the church exists for the world just as Jesus came to serve those in need. Not that those who aren’t sick or lost are more important, it is just that we too easily ignore or overlook the obvious needs of our neighbours.

We have witnessed with amazement how a small endeavour to invite people for lasagna on a Monday night has grown into an expansive array of services and activity including a huge Christmas Hamper project, a Bike Shop, a Food Bank, Mobile Meals, Community Meals and so much more!

The Open Generation

World Vision Canada is presenting The Open Generation: Gen Z, Jesus & Justice, a “night of connection to discuss faith & social justice alongside Canadian teens” next Wednesday (October 26):

World Vision is hosting a connection event in response to Barna’s latest study, The Open Generation, which explored the perceptions and practices of 13 – 17 year olds surrounding Jesus, the Bible and social justice.

We’re going to be passing the mic to Canadian teens to hear directly from them and discussing related topics that matter to youth, parents and leaders across Canada.

    • Watch Barna President, David Kinnaman highlight the latest findings on Canadian teenagers and how they feel about faith and practice it.
    • Listen to a live discussion between youth and church leaders as they reflect on the findings and relate it to their own lives.
    • Ask your own questions of the on-stage speakers and help guide the discussion to the topics that are most important to you!

You can download a summary of the report by going here.

There is a local connection, kind of – Alpha, though it works across Canada, is based in New Westminster! But I’m also hoping a number of local pastors will discover some valuable insights during the webinar.
