Around Town: Homelessness Action, Flavours of Hope, William Brackney

First Baptist Church is expecting a couple of hundred visitors for their Homelessness Action Day October 14:

We have so much to be thankful for! Let’s give thanks to our Lord. For the last 20 years, First Baptist Church has been opening our doors to serve the poor. It’s just a natural part of who we are and is an act of Thanksgiving. People know that this church on this corner is also there for the poor.

First Baptist Church hosts this event as our part of the Homelessness Action Week, a week where different churches and organizations through the Lower Mainland raise public awareness on issues of homelessness and rally local solutions.

We partner with Ellen Silvergieter of St Paul’s Anglican Church, who is as an advocate for the poor. She does much of the organizing, and her husband helps with tax filing.

What will take place on the 14th?

Drop-in 10 am to 3 pm

Our guests will have access to:

    • Hearing aid tests
    • Help with their income tax
    • Free pet food & other supplies through the SPCA
    • Naloxone kits
    • Free hair cuts
    • Nursing students doing blood pressure tests
    • Information around housing and support services
    • Free fresh sandwiches & goodies, coffee & tea
    • Free toiletry kits
    • Free reading glasses

The Union Gospel Mission Thanksgiving Dinner (October 14, 10 am – 6 pm) is also part of Homelessness Action Week.

There will be several events in New Westminster as well from October 12 – 18: a community walk from the Salvation Army October 12; a Thanksgiving lunch at UGM October 14; and a community breakfast at Holy Trinity Cathedral October 15.

An article in the New Westminster Record noted a final event October 18:

New Westminster is closing out Homelessness Action Week 2019 with a free screening of Us & Them, a documentary on homelessness that chronicles the filmmaker’s experience befriending four chronically homeless individuals who ultimately change the course of her life. It’s taking place at Holy Trinity Cathedral (514 Carnarvon St.) beginning with free refreshments from Greens and Beans Deli being served at 6 pm and the screening of the film from 7 to 8:20 pm, followed by a guided discussion until 8:50 pm.

Sharing Food. Sharing Culture

Flavours of Hope is “a non-profit social enterprise that supports and empowers refugee newcomer women to gain economic security and build social connections in communities through cooking and sharing culinary traditions and stories.”

Their focus will be front and centre in an event they are co-hosting next weekend:

As part of the City of Vancouver’s 10th anniversary Sustenance Festival, that celebrates food, art and culture in the community, Flavours of Hope and Grandview Woodland Food Connection are collaborating together to host a Sharing Food. Sharing Culture event on Saturday, October 19 from 3:30 – 5:30 pm at the Canucks Family Education Centre in East Vancouver.

Come and learn from three remarkable newcomer women chefs from Venezuela, Philippines and Saudi Arabia, who will share their favourite family recipes and stories of migration through the lens of food.

We will have three cooking stations to make some traditional sweet and savoury appetizers from different cultures. Participants will help to prepare the food and hear stories behind the dishes from the women chefs. We will share food together in a long-table style after cooking and discuss about the role of food in experiencing belonging and identity in the community.

I have written about  Flavours of Hope and its founder Trixie Ling here, here and here.

Festschrift for William Brackney

Colin Godwin (left) presenting the festschrift to William Brackney (right).

He was born into the Baptist fold and has made it his life study. Dr. William Brackney was recognized by Carey Theological College – where he teaches – for his long service and expertise September 28.

Carey’s president, Dr. Colin Godwin, presented him with a festschrift, Crossing Baptist Boundaries – the collection of essays by fellow Baptist scholars is dedicated to Brackney.

Here is how Carey describes his background:

Reared in a hybrid American/Southern Baptist context, Brackney has served as Vice President and Dean of the American Baptist seminary, Eastern Baptist; as Executive Director of the American Baptist Historical Society; as Dean of Theology at McMaster University and Principal of the Divinity College; as Chair of the Department of Religion at Baylor University; and a distinguished Professor Emeritus at Acadia University in Nova Scotia, Canada.

He currently holds the Pioneer MacDonald Chair of Baptist Theology and Ethics at Carey Theological College in Vancouver [which is affiliated with the Canadian Baptists of Western Canada].

In addition to his extensive exposure to American Baptists, Canadian Baptists, Southern Baptists and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, Brackney has worked extensively in the Baptist World Alliance, where he became acquainted with Baptist leaders from all over the world. The author of numerous books and articles on Baptists, he has written on diverse aspects of Baptist life from a global as well as continental perspective.

Taking a week off

I will not post a weekly update of Church for Vancouver next week (ie, October 16) because my daughter Katherine is getting married (to Michael) this weekend. Time to celebrate, spend time with visiting relatives, etc.
