Around Town: Stone’s Throw, Herbert Tsang, Indigenous Peoples Day . . .

Pacific Theatre keeps busy, even when it’s not actually on stage. The Stone’s Throw Theatre Festival will take place in four parts for the rest of the month and into early July.

Here’s a description of how it will work:

While operating a fully professional mainstage, Pacific Theatre is also community-based and offers non-professional community members opportunities to work alongside theatre professionals in its community shows through its non-professional counterpart, Stone’s Throw Productions. Most Stone’s Throw shows are produced by our season apprentices.

Memory House by Kathleen Tolan (June 12 – 15)

One winter night a woman bakes a pie as a girl tries to finish her college essay. As the deadline looms, unexamined issues of the girl’s adoption from Russia, the rupture of her parents’ divorce, and the fear of leaving home break through the surface. Directed by Rick Colhoun.

We are the Body by Andrew Kooman (June 20 – 22)

The last thing for any of us, I think, will be silence. In solitary confinement behind the Iron Curtain in post-war Romania, three prisoners are trapped in darkness and tortured for their beliefs. Featuring Kira Fondse.

Henry V by William Shakespeare (June 25 – 29)

Let us on your imaginary forces work. A young girl puts aside her dolls to play soldier, leading her sister, friends and family through the harrowing and heroic saga of Shakespeare’s Henry V. Featuring Shelby Wyminga.

Agamemnon by Aeschylus (July 4 – 6)

In war, the first casualty is truth. The King must die. It is a place like Argos, the tenth year of the Trojan War, the year the prophets say that Troy will fall. Agamemnon’s victory is near at hand. Clytemnestra is poised to act on a wound burned deep into her heart. Directed by Linnea Perry.

Herbert Tsang’s award

A recent Langley Advance article took note of an achievement by Herbert Tsang:

A Trinity Western professor has been recognized for his efforts in emphasizing the world’s computing future to university classrooms.

Dr. Herbert H. Tsang, PhD, PEng, was awarded the 2019 Excellence and Innovation in the Integration of Technology – a prize given out in partnership with the Canadian Network for Innovation in Education.

“I am honoured and humbled to be recognized for the integration of technology into the learning environment,” Tsang said.

A Professor of Computing Science and Mathematics, Tsang’s support of technology has been long applauded. His courses covering modern multimedia systems, wireless communications and even iPhone app development were offered before many other institutions had similar programs developed.

Indigenous Peoples Day(s)
At least a couple of Vancouver churches are holding special gatherings to mark National Indigenous Peoples Day, though not on the day itself, which is June 21.
Mosaic Church
Mosaic Church is inviting people in their neighbourhood to join Downtown Eastside churches and local residents for a celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day this Saturday (June 15, 1 – 6 pm.
Mosaic has held similar celebrations for many years; this is how they describe their approach all year round:

As a community of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, we desire to be a place of education and celebration of Indigenous cultures and histories. We acknowledge that we meet in a building on unceded Musqueam land, and are grateful to and mindful of that nation.

We hope to provide a welcoming environment where our First Nations, Inuit and Metis friends can discover or rediscover the Creator’s love for them. We also want to encourage our non-Indigenous friends to hear and learn from their Indigenous brothers and sisters in Christ.

We attempt to be honest with each other, to face the past and imagine a positive future together. We also want to be a voice to other communities regarding the realities of First Nations, Inuit and Metis histories and our collective responsibility and need to work with hope in order to move forward.
The gathering takes place on Princess Street, south of Hastings, beside Strathcona Church, where Mosaic meets.

  • Welcome from Archbishop Melissa Skelton
  • Kwhlii Gibaygum Nisga’a Dancers
  • CEO Kevin Barlow, Metro Vancouver Aboriginal Executive Council
  • V’ni Dansi, Yvonne Chartrand Metis Dancers
  • Inspector Suzanne Muir and Constable Rick Lavallee VPD
  • Love Medicine, the Big Drum
  • Lunch
  • Closing comments
The celebration will take place in the gardens surrounding the Synod Office.
