Top 10 in the nation. Impressive. Allyson Jule, a professor of gender studies at Trinity Western University’s School of Education, has been named one of Canada’s top 10 professors. Jule has been awarded a prestigious 3M Teaching Fellowship for excellence in teaching and leadership, marking the first time a TWU professor has won the honour.
Maclean’s featured the 10 professors in its February 4 issue, saying of Jule:
Jule’s courses reward adventurous spirits. She travels with her students to Cameroon for three weeks, where they teach students, often by candlelight. “It is quite the thing to see teaching done in a totally different context,” she says. Closer to home, she’s combined faith and feminism by creating the gender studies minor at Trinity Western.
“For me, it’s a statement about the School of Education, its faculty and staff, and the kinds of atmosphere of excellence we create together,” says Jule, who is currently on sabbatical and completing a research fellowship at Oxford University.
Sisters of Saint Anne bless St. Mark’s
Saint Mark’s College on the UBC campus announced February 5 that the Sisters of Saint Anne have contributed $3 million to the college to establish the Marie Anne Blondin Chair in Theology. The endowment represents the largest in the college’s history, and also one of the largest gifts received by a Catholic theological college in BC.
The Sisters of Saint Anne have had a strong interest in education ever since the congregation was founded by Marie Anne Blondin in Vaudreuil, Quebec in 1850; the original purpose of the Congregation was to educate children in rural Quebec. Since their arrival in Victoria in 1858, the Sisters of Saint Anne have established 30 schools and 10 hospitals throughout the BC, Yukon and Alaska.
There are at least three books detailing the work of the Sisters of Saint Anne in the West: A Century of Service by Edith E. Down; Caring and Compassion by Darlene Southwell; and North to Share by Sister Margaret Cantwell in collaboration with Sister Mary George Edmond.
Dementia Awareness
Planted Community Food Network is joining forces with Pomegranate Training to host a participatory Dementia Awareness Workshop for anyone interested in learning about dementia, caring for vulnerable seniors and building stronger communities. Here’s what they say about the event:
An estimated one out of every three people reading this will develop some form of dementia in their golden years. This workshop will explore the nutritional needs of our aging population. We will share practical information to help understand early signs of dementia and how to support individuals at our community programs.
Participants will leave with knowledge of healthy eating strategies to assist people with dementia and ideas for creating socially stimulating environments at mealtimes.
The workshop will take place next Tuesday afternoon (February 16) at Tenth Church in Vancouver.
Healthy Aging
Another upcoming event related to getting older is Transitions of Life, which will consider ‘Healthy Aging, Retirement and the Spiritual Journey.’ Organizers say:
This seminar will review the emerging trends, the challenges of aging and the Christian framework for understanding the retirement time of life as part of our spiritual journey. The content and discussion will cover material and resources designed to help maturing adults (50-plus), either approaching or already in retirement to discover peace and purpose for this season of life through personal growth and ministry development.
The topics will focus on gaining an appreciation of the differences between the “old retirement” vs “new retirement” approach to aging, including:
- fragmentation vs wholeness
- purposelessness vs purposefulness
- fixation vs creative change
- idle busyness vs life enrichment
- dependency vs independence
- self-absorption vs healthy self-esteem
- attitude of criticism vs attitude of mentorship
- alienation vs involvement
Led by Dr. Paul Pearce, the day (10 am – 4 pm) will take place February 20 at Carey, on the UBC campus.
